Here I am, sitting in my lounge room surrounded by untidy chaos. The irony is that I’m writing a blog about cleaning. YUK – cleaning is the one thing I could do without in my life. I need to improve my home cleaning routine, and sooner rather than later, before I’m swallowed by all this mess.
Hopefully, by writing this, I might be inspired to at least keep one room tidy.
Here are some simple daily habits to help keep your space tidy with minimal effort. These habits can make a big difference:

One Room at a Time
If you find that cleaning is overwhelming, start with one room at a time. Make it your mission to keep that room clean and prioritise it every day. Once it becomes a habit, add another room to your routine.
The 2-Minute Rule
If a task takes less than two minutes to complete, do it immediately. This could be as simple as hanging up a coat, putting away shoes, wiping down a surface, or vacuuming a high-traffic area.
Nightly Reset
Spend 10–15 minutes each evening doing a quick tidy-up. Put away any stray items, clean the kitchen, and prepare for the next day. This helps you start your day in a clean and organised space and puts your mind at ease for a good night’s sleep.
One-in, One-out Rule
To prevent clutter, adopt the rule that for every new item you bring into your home, one existing item must be removed. This helps maintain balance and reduces the accumulation of unnecessary items. It’s very hard if you’re a hoarder, but give it a go – no matter the pain!
Laundry System
Set up a simple laundry system to avoid piling up dirty clothes. This could include doing a small load of laundry each day or designating specific days for different coloured clothes after they have been sorted.
Clean as You Go
Whether you’re cooking, crafting, or doing any other activity, try to clean up as you go. This prevents messes from building up and makes the final cleanup much quicker.
Declutter Regularly
Take some time each week to declutter a specific area. It could be a drawer, a closet, or a corner of a room. Keeping clutter at bay makes cleaning much easier.
Use Storage Solutions
Invest in storage solutions like baskets, bins, and organisers. These can help keep items in their place and make it easier to find what you need. Label these containers so it’s simple to locate things.
Involve the Rest of the Family
Don’t do this alone. If you don’t live by yourself, get the rest of your family to help with chores. Create a jobs list to lighten the load.
Create a Cleaning Playlist
Make cleaning more enjoyable by creating a playlist of your favourite songs or listening to a podcast. This can make the time fly and add some fun to your routine.
Multi-task
Combine cleaning with other activities, like talking on the phone or watching a show. This way, cleaning feels like less of a chore. I often put my headphones on, and if I’m cleaning the lounge room, I will put a movie on and watch that as I work.
Mindful Cleaning
Focus on the task at hand and take it one step at a time. This can make cleaning feel less overwhelming and more manageable.
Pay for a Cleaner to Do the Jobs You Hate
I hate mopping floors or cleaning the bathroom, so I have a cleaner who comes in once a week to handle those tasks. It’s a more effective option for me and I still focus on cleaning as I have to tidy up things on the floor first before the cleaner arrives.
Which of these ideas do you think would fit into your routine? 😊 Improving your home cleaning routine will empower you!
